Dubai just took its biggest leap yet toward a driverless future. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Pony.ai — a global leader in autonomous driving — to launch pilot trials of self-driving vehicles across the emirate later this year, with a fully commercial robotaxi service planned for 2026.

What the RTA–Pony.ai Deal Means for Dubai

Pony.ai's 7th-Gen Autonomous Vehicles

Pony.ai isn't arriving in Dubai with prototype hardware. The company will deploy its 7th-generation autonomous vehicles, co-developed with Toyota, GAC, and BAIC. These aren't science projects — they're production-grade robotaxis already operating in Chinese megacities.

The tech stack is serious:

• Advanced AI driving software trained on millions of real-road kilometres
• Multiple lidar sensors for 360-degree depth perception
• Radar arrays for velocity and distance tracking in all weather
