A new homegrown off-road SUV brand just entered the GCC arena — and it's built for Gulf roads from the ground up.

On May 4, 2026, UAE-based technology and mobility company K2 unveiled THEEB (meaning "wolf" in Arabic) and its first vehicle, the X01 mid-size off-road SUV, at the Make it in the Emirates 2026 event in Abu Dhabi.

This isn't another rebadged import. THEEB is a brand designed specifically for Gulf lifestyles, built around the realities of desert driving, long-distance family travel, and extreme summer heat. And with a targeted 550 HP plug-in hybrid powertrain, it's aiming straight at the region's off-road heavyweights.

Just Launched: UAE's THEEB Brand Unveils X01 PHEV Off-Road SUV — 550 HP

What Is THEEB?

THEEB — pronounced "theeb" — takes its name from the Arabic word for wolf, symbolizing endurance, strength, and resilience. The logo is a geometric rendering of the Arabic word in rasm, the earliest undotted Arabic script.

K2's Managing Director Sean Teo explained the philosophy behind the brand:

"In this region, vehicles become part of everyday life. They carry families across long distances, support gatherings in the desert. With THEEB, we wanted to begin from a different perspective, one shaped around the realities of the Gulf and the people who call it home."

That's a direct challenge to the status quo. Most off-road SUVs sold in the GCC are adapted from vehicles originally designed for other climates and terrains. THEEB flips that script — starting with the Gulf and building outward.

THEEB X01: Specs That Matter

The THEEB X01 is a mid-size off-road SUV available in three configurations. While still in pre-production and pending certification, the targeted specs are impressive.

Powertrain: A 2.0-litre turbocharged engine paired with a 19.45 kWh plug-in hybrid electric system, targeting 550 HP and 760 Nm of torque. That puts it ahead of the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 (409 HP) and challenges the Land Rover Defender V8 (518 HP).

Off-road capability: 235 mm of ground clearance and 13 drive modes including Sand, Rock, Wade, Crawl, and a Tank Turn function — which allows the vehicle to spin in place by counter-rotating the wheels.

Assembly: Designed in the UAE, with assembly at a semi-knocked-down (SKD) facility in Abu Dhabi using externally manufactured components. That puts it in line with the UAE's push for local manufacturing under the Make it in the Emirates initiative.

How Does It Compare to the GCC's Off-Road Icons?

Here's how the X01 stacks up against the segment's benchmarks:

  • Toyota Land Cruiser 300: 409 HP, 225 mm ground clearance — the X01 targets 550 HP and 235 mm
  • Land Rover Defender V8: 518 HP, 291 mm max clearance — the X01 matches the power target but sits lower
  • Nissan Patrol: 400 HP, 234 mm clearance — the X01's PHEV system gives it a fuel economy edge that the V8 Patrol can't match

The hybrid system is the real differentiator. A plug-in hybrid off-road SUV is rare in this segment, and it gives the THEEB X01 an advantage in city driving and fuel economy — a genuine concern for GCC buyers who daily-drive their large SUVs.

When Can You Buy the THEEB X01 in the UAE?

Here's the reality check: THEEB is still in pre-production. K2 has not announced pricing or availability dates yet.

The X01 was shown at the Make it in the Emirates 2026 event at ADNEC Abu Dhabi (Hall 08 - AI20, running May 4-7, 2026), and the company is clearly in the validation and certification phase.

Given the SKD assembly model and the UAE's growing automotive manufacturing ecosystem, we could see a production timeline within 12-24 months — but K2 hasn't confirmed anything officially.

What's Next for THEEB?

The X01 is just the first vehicle. THEEB is positioned as a full brand, not a one-off model. If the X01 reaches production with its targeted specs — 550 HP, 760 Nm, 13 drive modes, and genuine Gulf-first engineering — it could shake up a segment dominated by Japanese and American imports.

But the road from concept to showroom is long. K2 needs to prove reliability in Gulf heat, secure supply chains for its SKD operation, and hit a price point that makes sense against the Land Cruiser and Patrol.

The bottom line: THEEB is the most ambitious homegrown off-road SUV brand the UAE has seen. The X01's spec sheet reads like a direct challenge to the segment leaders. Now we wait to see if K2 can deliver.

We'll bring you pricing, availability, and test drive impressions as soon as K2 announces them.
